The Approach

Read to Me Daley consulting/tutoring follows the Interactive Strategies Approach for intervention lessons.  This is an approach, rather than a program.  Lessons are not preset or scripted. Rather, instruction is responsive to the individual needs of each student.

Lessons include the following components:

  • Rereading familiar texts to provide fluency practice and deepen comprehension.

  • Word Work allows students to learn and practice the alphabetic code, as well as memorize words that do not follow the regular vowel patterns.  (These are called sight words). Word work is connected to the new text that will be introduced later in the lesson.

  • Phonemic Awareness practice allows readers to attend to and become aware of  the specific sound units in words.

  • Introduction of new text at an appropriate level of challenge. This allows for  comprehension and vocabulary work, as well as strategic word solving that uses both code and meaning based clues.

  • Writing about the reading. Students have an opportunity to build comprehension skills through writing, as well as practice spelling skills.

This approach emphasizes motivation to read, as well as independence in word solving. Children must have tools at the ready and feel confident in using them to overcome difficulties while reading.
